  1. So far I’ve seen examples with numbers close to each other like ” 18×19″, “27×28″, “34×35″.

    How about separating them a bit more like “45 x 73″, or so. So far doing it the old way seems faster because there are only 2 steps: multiplying single digits and adding single digits.

    The base method does addition, subtraction, multiplication, carrying a number (just like in the “old math”), and multiplying “again” by the base number when necessary.

    If it ain’t broken (it works fine), don’t fix it.

  3. You’ve selected the correct notional base ie 50 but the actual base is 10. here r the steps

    1) 48 -> -2 & 54 ->+4 (subtracting from base)

    2) 52 // -8 (either 48 + 4 or 54 – 2 // -2 x +8)

    3) since 50(notional base is 5 times actual base of 10, multiply 52 by 5

    260 // -8
    4) multiply left hand side by 10 (base) and add it to the right hand side
    2600 + (-8) = 2592

    14 / 63 — where 6 is the carry that will be added to the first part
    x3 — multiply the first part to the base

    I wouldnt use this method for the this problem since it is much simple with cross multiplication.

  5. I used base 60. Find the difference between 87-60=27 and 67-60=7. Work out 27×7=189, so the number at the end would be 9 as the video would suggest. You also have to carry the 18 part from 189. You can do 87+7 or 67+27, either way, you will get 94, so that is placed next to the 9; so far I had 949. But 94 has to be multiplied by 6 (because 6 is 60 (our base) divided by 10 (the real base)). 94×6=564. we also have to add the 18 we obtained earlier to 564; 564+18=582. Put next to 9 to get 5829 :) .
